Q: Why do you think self-care is more important during this difficult and uncertain time?
A: During these difficult times, I’m leaning towards extra self-care to help me deal with the uncertainties and stay present. Since I don’t have the pressures of being on the go, exploring new avenues of self-care at home helps determine what works for me.
Q: What does your self-care at home ritual currently look like?
A: My self-care ritual is evolving now that I have time to explore, but some daily practices are kept sacred, dubbed my Magical Mornings. I devote 30 minutes of alone time to meditate, journal, and share my gratitude and intentions through voice message to my Magical Morning partners, a group of women who are all about high vibes in the morning. Doing all this ground me and sets up a positive and intentional day.
Throughout the day, I incorporate self-care that takes a few moments. I name practices to make it fun: Tea Time at 10am is my break where I mindfully drink tea and take notes, and 10 Minute Tidy tackles cleaning an area by the timer's end.
My evening rituals include a workout with my daughter and hitting the kitchen for more self-care through cooking. Before bed, I check my habit tracker that lists the self-care rituals I’m working on for the month, which always includes moisturizing with my favorite Samudra Skin & Sea Face Cream. It’s rewarding to see checkmarks add up because it shows the effort I’m putting into taking care of myself.
Q: Tell us about the recipe you did on Herbalist Day with our Clay Mask.
A: I enjoy incorporating healing herbs into self-care, and a few weeks ago, National Herbalist Day fell on Facial Friday, a day when my daughter and I indulge in face masks. I looked through my Botanical Skin Care Recipe Book from Herbal Academy to find a recipe using what I have on hand.
I found a clarifying mask that uses clay and a choice of ingredients based on skin concerns - or in this case, what was in my pantry. I had the Samudra Skin & Sea Wild Seaweed Clay Mask to use as my base, and from there I added:
Matcha powder - Astringes, tones, and calms skin
Raw honey - Soothes, moisturizes, and reduces bacteria
Crushed rose petals - For oily skin
Lavender - For normal/dry skin
These ingredients in your diet provide superb health benefits, and applying it directly to skin allows you to soak up those benefits directly, as well as provide a sensory experience. My daughter and I applied the mask on each other and the texture of the crushed herbs and the scent of the lavender was so refreshing.
Afterwards, I had leftover herbs and matcha for next time. To keep my skincare shelf aesthetic and intentional, I reused an empty Samudra Skin & Sea Face Cream jar to store the extras right next to my Wild Seaweed Clay Mask.
